"The way of Transgressors is hard."

—A medical gentleman from the country a few days since came into town and put up at one of our public houses. He had a hundred and twenty or thirty dollars in money in his pocket, which had been seen by his landlord and others. It was soon discovered that he was in the habit of taking now and then a glass of strong drink, and that his glasses were sometimes repeated so often as to produce intoxication.

On Thursday he visited a certain house on Washington street, where he spent some time, and on his return found he had been robbed of the whole of his money. On Friday morning he had the horrors in painful perfection. The loss of his money, the loss of character, and the stings of remorse were too much to bear. He procured a loaded pistol and went into the stable, where he prepared to take his life, but was discovered just in season to prevent the execution of his purpose. He was requested to deliver up his pistols but refused. An officer was called, who took him, with a warrant, took his pistols from him, and carried him to the house of correction. He was not at all reconciled to his situation, was unwilling to live, and declared he should be a dead man before morning. Morning came, however and found him alive, and in some degree sobered down. The house on Washington-street was searched, but the money could not be found.

We refrain from giving the doctors name in compassion for his family and friends, to whom the intelligence must be very unpleasant and to some of them painful.—Portland Courier.
