The "Ohio First." The Ohio Legislature, at its last session, passed a series of resolutions complimentary to the Ohio Volunteers. One of them reads,

Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That in the name and on behalf of the people of Ohio, we tender to the officers and soldiers composing the volunteer regiments from the State, our thanks and approbation for their gallant conduct in the several brilliant achievements in the war with Mexico.

Gov. Bebb, as instructed by the Legislature, forwarded these resolutions to Col. Mitchell, commander of the 1st Ohio Regiment, accompanied with the following letter:

Executive Department,
Columbus, Ohio.

Col. A. M. MITCHELL, 1st Reg't. O. V.:

My dear Sir--I take great pleasure in forwarding to you the enclosed preamble and resolutions, passed by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, which you will please cause to be read to the officers and soldiers under your command.

And you will accept for yourself, and present to them assurances of my high estimation of their patriotism and gallantry.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and the great seal of the State of Ohio this tenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and forty-seven.

WILLIAM BEBB.

Col. Mitchell has returned the following pointed reply:

Monterey, April 27th, 1847.

To his Excellency the Gov. of the State of Ohio:

Sir--Dear Sir:--I had the honor to receive from you a communication, accompanying some resolutions passed by the Legislature of Ohio, purporting to be complimentary to the volunteers from that State.

As the 1st Ohio Regiment is the only one which has had the fortune to be in a regular battle, and as no particular reference is made in the resolution, to the conduct of the brave officers and men of that regiment at the battle of Monterey, I have most respectfully declined having them published to my regiment, as requested in your note.

Yours, respectfully

A. M. MITCHELL, Col. Com'g.
