The fight for the National Women's party for equality with men reached its high point of enthusiasm last night with a demonstration and a parade, relates a Colorado Springs, Col., dispatch of Monday.
Gaudy banners flung out the battle cry, "Fight for the right and no quarter." This slogan was cabled from Europe by Mrs. Oliver H. P. Belmont, absent president, who was re-elected Saturday.
The parade marked the climax of the convention prior to the departure of a selected committee to plead with President Coolidge at his summer camp for equal rights amendment to the constitution.
Fifty complaints, fodder for their campaign, were compiled after scrutiny of every constitutional provision, both state and national, and every court decision bearing on women. They show that "there is not a single state in the union where men and women live under equal protection of the law." Among the complaints listed are:--
The father is sole natural guardian of minor children, with primary right to their custody and control.
In New York and Michigan the father is entitled earnings of minor children.
Brunt of burden of illegitimate parenthood is placed upon women. In Idaho and Texas there are no laws requiring the father to contribute to support of an illegitimate child.
In some states the father has first right to sue for damages for the seduction of a daughter, the theory of the law being that she is his servant.
The wife cannot recover damages from a woman who has improper relations with her husband, but a husband can collect damages from a man who violates his marriage bed.
In Georgia the earnings of a married woman are the property of her husband.
Women are prohibited in some states from earning their living by working nights. For example, a New York law makes it a crime to employ women as waitresses after 10 p. m., although women may be employed in cabarets and scrub floors all night.
