Extract of a Letter from the Hague, Dec. 3.

Whilst the Armies are returning to their Quarters, after an Encampment of Fifty three Days, let us examine the Strength of those two Germanic Powers who are next Summer to decide the Fate of the Religion and Liberties of the Germanick Body. The Friends of Prussia confidently maintain, that the King of that Name has actually 265,000 Men on Foot. This is a great Number, and more than we ever heard of before. Horace, perhaps, would say, Vah! Supipedalia verba. What has been given as an authentick List of his Forces, is as follows.

France, which is also to act a principal Part next Campaign, had, on Foot, when the Peace of Aix la-Chapelle was signed, 385382 effective Men: And by the Augmentations which that Crown hath successively made within the last Year and a Half, it has about the same Number at present. Russia, likewise, has a very fine Army; for not to mention the Cavalry of the Cossacks, Calmucs &c. it has an Hundred Regiments of Foot in good Condition. But the Sinews of War are wanting at that Court. The Revenue of the Crown is only eleven Millions of Roubles: It is therefore unable to wage War abroad, except in Turkey, without Subsidies. But there is another Remark to be made in regard to Russia: Its Troops are not advancing, says many People, who relate the following Anecdote: The King of Prussia hath found Means to get the Pieces published in his Vindication, delivered into the Empress's own Hands, who, struck with the manifest Truths therein contained, hath changed her Sentiments. The second Anecdote is, that notwithstanding what has been given out, her Imperial Majesty is not well. She hath an Absces in her Bowels. They wanted M. Gobius, an eminent Physician at Leyden, to go to Petersburgh to prescribe for her; but on hearing her Case, he refused. We may therefore soon expect to hear some great News from the North.
