Full Text
A special correspondent of the New York Times has been traveling through the desolated counties of New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey where the recent forest fires have been raging. He estimates the total losses by these fires at two and one-half millions.
The Pomona woods in New Jersey have been largely damaged. No less than twenty-five thousand acres of timber land have been laid waste. Houses, saw-mills and factories have been burned down. In this section the loss in lumber alone was one-quarter million dollars. In Wayne, Pike and Luzerne counties, Penn., millions of feet of lumber were burned and men who two weeks ago were wealthy are to-day penniless. These fires began two weeks ago, and at first did not attract much attention, as at this season they are common in those sections. But the usual droughts this spring gave the fires volume and force so that they could not be arrested. The recent rains have served to extinguish the fires and dangers of further losses are over.
