Full Text

By Benjamin W. Richards, 2d Vice President.

True Democracy. The free will and free choice of the people; it scorns alike official dictation, official patronage, and the delusive and treacherous machinery of official leaders.

The above sentiment was offered and drank at the festival at Bush Hill, Philadelphia, on the 4th instant, and though read by a conspicuous member of the Administration party, it seems to have given great offence to some who are ambitious of being considered political leaders. To our mind the toast was most opportunely given, and opportunely drank. It contains a sound and wholesome truth—a truth of democracy—a sentiment which it is becoming in the people, at all times, and under all circumstances to express, and one which those least of all should object to, who profess to be exclusive democrats.
