Arrived here, on Wednesday last schooner Atlantic, captain Hill, in 17 days from Martinique, and 12 from St. Croix.
Captain H. informs that the French took possession of Martinique on the 14th of last month--that the government immediately laid a heavy duty on all American imports, and 7 per cent. on all exports, which had given great discontent to the inhabitants--that in consequence of the low state of the funds it was daily expected that additional duties would be laid.
Captain H. left at Martinique upwards of 30 sail of American vessels.
Mr. Achilles Crutchfield, of this place passenger in the Atlantic, died at sea on the 10th inst.--a young gentleman much esteemed by his acquaintance.
