Full Text

The advocates for the slave trade argue that the natives of Africa are at perpetual war with each other: and that if they had no method of selling their captives, they would fall upon the more inhuman practice of murdering those unhappy creatures whom the chance of war flung into their hands. This however, is far from being the truth; for it is notorious that the petty Princes on the sea coasts of Guinea are tempted to make war on their neighbors only for the sake of making prisoners to sell to the Europeans. Was this practice done away, the source of their contention would be immediately done away.

Advocates for the slave trade claim African natives are in perpetual war and would murder captives without selling them, but this is untrue; petty princes on Guinea's sea coasts wage war solely to capture prisoners for sale to Europeans, and ending this practice would eliminate their conflicts.
