Full Text

Seals.—Two seals, a few days since, were shot at the New Mills, in Danvers, one measuring 3 feet in length, and weighing 60 pounds. The other, upwards of 4 feet and a half in length, 4 feet in circumference, and weighing 182 pounds. The one first mentioned answered the description given of the common seal (Phoca vitulina of Linn.) as described by Harlan in his Fauna Americana, excepting where he says, in the description of the common seal, page 108, "the nails are largest on the hind feet, thick, long, free, and of a black color," which is not the case, the reverse being true. The larger seal appeared of a different species from the one first mentioned, not often to be found on our shores, but answering the description given of the Phoca grenlandica of Buffon, which inhabits the coast of Greenland.—Salem Observer.
