Full Text

The public schools opened last week with an increase of 995 pupils over the first-day enrolment of last September. This increase is the largest ever recorded on an opening day, but owing to ample housing provisions made during the summer, no serious congestion occurred. The total enrolment given out at the school department Wednesday was 20,079 as against 19,084 on the opening day last year. It is thought that the unusual first-day record is due to the fact that the schools opened one day later this year, allowing that much more time for vacationists to return to the city.
