CANADA WANTS "MAIL" SUBSIDIES
The British Government Willing to Grant
a Bonus to the Steamer Lines.

OTTAWA, Ont., March 28.-Although the

years
paid an annual subsidy to the steam-

Great Britain and the United States,
they have always, up to the present
time, declined to make a similar appropria-
tion toward the ocean mail service between
Canada and the British Isle. The Dominion
government are now taking active steps to-
ward securing an imperial subsidy to sup-
plement the annual grant voted each year
by the Dominion parliament for the ocean

that they will move at once in the matter,
and that the postal arrangements between
Great Britain and her colonies will be one
of the most important subjects which the
imperial conference, meeting at London in
April, will have to deal with. The British
mails for China and Asiatic ports which
now pass through the United States to San
Francisco, will be carried over the Canadian
Pacific to British Columbia and thence to
their destination, during the coming summer.
The British government have intimated that,
by way of assisting the Canadian Pacific
Railway company, in recognition of the
value of their road for military purposes.
they will subsidize the line of ocean steamers
which they intend running on the Atlantic
and Pacific in connection with their rail
way.
