During a recent cruise, the Ganges fell in with the Surprize, British frigate of 26 guns, Capt. Philips, who sent a boat with an officer on board, to demand of Capt. Tingey whether he had any British subjects on board the Ganges, and if so, that they might be delivered up, and whether his men were supplied with protections. The officer also demanded sight of Captain Tingey's commission. Capt. Tingey answered, that he knew his men only as Americans--that the American flag was sufficient protection for any person on board his ship, and that if the commander of the frigate persisted in demanding a sight of his commission, he was determined, altho he did not doubt his holding one, that he should first shew his own.
The British officer then returned to his ship. Capt. Tingey, after having ordered his men to quarters, communicated to them his determination, which was received with three cheers.
A boat shortly after returned from the frigate, with a polite message from Capt. Philips, by his surgeon, apologizing for what had taken place, and requesting a supply of medicine, which was complied with, and the business ended.
Capt. Tingey's conduct towards the insolent commander of the British frigate Surprize, does him great honor--it is consistent with the manly character which he has sustained in all parts of the world, and highly honorable to his country.
