TELEGRAMS IN BRIEF

WAR IN FAR EAST.

Kuropatkin retreated from Liaotung with the bulk of his army. An enormous body of troops is reported at Mukden, reinforcements having poured in rapidly.

German cruisers at Tsingchou cleared for action and protected the Russian ships in the harbor.

The Japanese cruiser Kasuga is reported to have been sunk in the battle of Aug. 10, going down with all on board.

Germany forced the Russians to haul down their flags on the ships at Tsingtau and announces that the crews will be detained there.

Russia in protesting to China against the Chefoo seizure declares the Chinese admiral at that port is either a coward or a traitor.

Admiral Kamimura defeated the Vladivostok squadron in a five hours battle, sinking the cruiser Rurik. The cruisers Rossia and Gromoboi badly damaged, fled.

Admiral Kamimura reports that when he sunk the Rurik in the battle with the Vladivostok fleet he rescued 600 out of the 760 men who made up the ship's crew.

The Japanese are planning an attack on the railroad between Liaoyang and Mukden. Chinese bandits accompanied by Japs with artillery have already advanced in that direction.

The general assault on Port Arthur is being carried on from both the land and sea sides. The Japanese guns now sweep the harbor and ships as well as fortress are at the mercy of the mikado's forces.

Rear Admiral Withoft, commander of the Russian naval forces at Port Arthur, it transpires, was killed in the attack by the Japanese when the czar's fleet attempted to escape from the harbor. The seriousness of that fight grows as battered Russian ships reappear at near-by ports. The Russian dead and wounded are said to number over 300, several of their largest ships suffered serious damage, and two torpedo-boats are sunk off Weihaiwei. The seizure of the Russian torpedo-boat by the Japanese in neutral ports cause international concern, but the powers are making efforts to meet the incidents without violation of neutrality.
