Donaldsonville, Gonzales, Ascension County, Louisiana
What is this article about?
The editorial defends 'the Chief' against accusations of inconsistency in approving the open Republican-endorsed Ascension fusion while opposing the secret, treacherous Iberville fusion. It declines further debate with the Democrat newspaper for now, sarcastically suggesting future topics and noting their ongoing dispute with the St. James Bugle Call.

Apropos of the dissertation on "The Eccentricities of the Chief" printed in the editorial columns of our local contemporary last week, we will simply say that the conditions under which the Iberville and Ascension fusions were effected were so totally dissimilar -the one being a square and open alliance, indorsed by the Republican organization, like the Ascension fusions of 1878-79, the other a consummation of a secret bargain and trade, to effect which the prime movers on one side displayed the direst treachery and most deliberate violation of verbal and written pledges- that there was no inconsistency on the part of the Chief in approving one fusion and opposing the other.
Reserving this point for further discussion hereafter and reminding our disputatious neighbor that its dogmatic assertions or expressions of opinion cannot alter or controvert the facts concerning the Ascension election as cited by the Chief, we must decline for the present to engage in a controversy of the character which our contemporary's articles seem calculated to provoke. After a while, perhaps, when the dog days are at hand, and times are dull, and local items scarce, and we can't find anything of more importance to fill our columns and interest our readers, we may enter into an exposition of the "Idiosyncracies of the Democrat," the "Follies and Foibles of the Fusion Organ," the "Terrible Mote in our Neighbor's Eye," or some equally important and engrossing subject. Meanwhile, the funny editor of the Democrat, the editor who steps on people's coat tails in double-leaded long primer one week and steps off the next, the editor who is nothing if not personal, the editor who abhors personalities and deprecates the argumentum ad hominem above all things, together with the various unclassified editors of our numerously edited contemporary, can secure ample training for the prospective controversy in the little bout they have opened with the St. James Bugle Call. They couldn't have struck a better place for that kind of mental exercise. Our only fear is that when they get through their mill with the young man who is roaming about in search of a Responsible Editor they will be in such a demoralized condition that it would be unmanly on our part to tilt a lance against them.
