Named To New Post In YMCA

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Thomas B. Hargraves, 1951 graduate of Knoxville College and former executive secretary of the Chestnut Street Branch YMCA, Portsmouth, Va., visited his alma mater on July 20 while enroute to his new post as associate student secretary on the Southern Area YMCA Council staff with headquarters in Atlanta, Ga.

Young Hargraves is the husband of the former Miss Geraldine Harden of Knoxville. They have three children, Barbara Ann 5; Thomas B. 3 and Edward Wesley, 2.

He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Thomas B. Hargraves who are formerly of Knoxville but are now living in Norfolk County, Va. Rev. Hargraves is working with the Northern United Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth. Mrs. Hargraves, a reading specialist, is teaching in the Norfolk County public school system.

She is a graduate of Knoxville College too.

The YMCA worker's sister, Mrs. Aulando H. Chambers, is practicing law in Norfolk, Va.

Mr. Hargraves will be working primarily with college YMCA's in ten Southern states. Since Tennessee is one of these states, KC is on his working list. He feels that a successful YMCA workshop can be held at his alma mater.

Bi-Racial Group Finds Harmony

The YMCA executive said that many college Y's have a secretary and a budget. Instead of having a YW and YMCA separately, some co-educational institutions combine them as Student Christian Associations. Mr. Hargraves thought it is significant that Southern Area Conferences are racially integrated.

Mr. Hargraves noted that the YMCA is in desperate need of good young men to serve in the personnel division. "The best place to find them is in the YMCA. That's where I got started-by being a member," he added. Salaries range from $3,600 up. Courses in guidance, group work, religion and community organization would be of help to persons interested in making YMCA work a career.

"Many times YMCA's aren't popular because students don't know what they are all about. Actually, a student "Y" is an association that handles projects handed down in programs of the National Council. It is not just a club," Mr. Hargraves pointed out.
