Mrs. Simpson, Cheerful,
Strolls In Riviera Sunshine;
French Police Protect Her

George VI Devotes Himself to
His New Job of Ruling Over
British Empire

Cannes, France, Dec. 15.—Wallis Warfield Simpson enjoyed the brilliant Riviera sunshine today in a stroll about the pink stucco villa where she has secluded herself, closely guarded by French police lest an influx of abusive letters be followed by attempts to harm her.

For the first time in several days, Mrs. Simpson left the villa to enjoy its expansive gardens with her hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rogers of New York. A detective hovered close by.

Other French guards watched over the estate, to permit no unwanted intruders, but detectives from Scotland Yard, London, who accompanied her, were ordered home.

There were no indications that the American-born divorcee had heard from Edward, Duke of Windsor, who abdicated his British throne to permit marriage to her, or that she planned in the near future to join him in his Austrian haven.

Calm and Cheerful
Mrs. Simpson, noted for her chic costumes, was dressed today in dark blue suit with bright collar and appeared calm and cheerful. Members of the household said they were not worried by the "crank letters," but nevertheless, the detective was installed as special guard and a new chauffeur was engaged to assist him.

The chauffeur replaced George Ladbrook, royal chauffeur who brought her to Cannes and who was ordered back to London with the English detectives.

Mrs. Simpson's host-spokesman said tonight that her "Aunt Bessie," Mrs. D. B. Merryman, would come from London to spend Christmas here, but that the date of her arrival was uncertain.

Asked if Edward telephoned today, Rogers said: "I can't answer that question."
Mrs. Simpson's "fan mail" has totaled almost 300 letters since her arrival, police said, including the abusive ones, a few with vague threats, and some expressing sympathy for her. Most of them were from England.
