Full Text
We have it from a correspondent of undoubted veracity, that the sloop which arrived at Port Royal on Monday last, with the goods which were recovered from the wreck of the ship Thompson, Oman, was an American, and came into the harbour under Congressional colours, which excited the honest vigilance of a certain Revenue Shark, to such a degree, that he boarded her before she came to an anchor, and actually imprinted the King's broad arrow upon her main-mast; but he was soon undeceived, with respect to the legality of the seizure, and retired to Port Royal in a state of mortification, arising from the disappointment, more easily to be conceived than described.—The above sloop, it seems, fell in with the wreck of the ship Thompson, by mere accident, and Capt. Oman employed her commander to bring the remnant of the cargo that was saved from the wreck, into this port ;—so that both justice and sound policy forbid any Custom-House depredations being committed against her, notwithstanding she is an American.
