The Catholic churches of Baltimore will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the landing of Columbus in an appropriate manner. An elaborate programme is being arranged at the suggestion of Cardinal Gibbons, who is deeply interested in having a suitable religious and civic display on Oct. 12. The religious celebration, according to a Baltimore paper, will include masses in all of the Catholic churches at an early hour, and at 11 o'clock pontifical high mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Gibbons in the cathedral. All of the priests of the city will be invited to be present at this mass. The Rev. Dr. O'Gorman, of the Catholic university at Washington, has been selected to preach the sermon. The pope has announced his intention to write an encyclical letter on the discovery of America and the position which the church at Rome occupied at that time toward Columbus and the assistance which was rendered him by the church. The programme of the civic display has not been decided upon, but it will probably include a big torchlight procession, in which the Catholic Benevolent legion, the Young Catholic Friends' society and all the societies and lyceums of the various churches will be invited to unite.
