Full Text

A WASHINGTON correspondent of the Madisonian tells the following story of Wm. R. Morrison, when asked how long the extra session would last: "Some years ago," said Mr. Morrison, "I was running for the United States Senate in Illinois, and my friend Heim, a brewer of East St. Louis, was a member of the Legislature. His idea of the way in which the business should be disposed of was crude but terse: 'Elect a speaker der first day; elect Bill Morrison der second day; repeal der high license der third day and go home.' The result was that it took them two months to elect a speaker, and then the temporary speaker refused to give up his seat. They never did elect Bill Morrison to the Senate, and they failed utterly to repeal the high license law. When it was over, Heim came to me, and gazing at me sadly, asked: 'Morrison, why you don't quit dot d--n politicking?' I replied that I had been at it all my life, did not know anything else, had grown old and would be compelled to stick to it as a means of livelihood, if for nothing else. 'Vell,' he replied, after a moment's consideration with his voice full of sympathy, 'it vas better you come mit me as a beer drummer. I gif you $10 a day und oxbenses.' If from Heim's experience in the Illinois Legislature, you can gather what I think of the repeal of the Sherman law, you are welcome to it."
