Wallace D Muhammad, son of Chicago's Elijah Muhammad and minister of Islam Temple No. 12 here, last week spoke out against housing discrimination in Philadelphia.
Citing the recent stoning of a home purchased by two Islam followers, the youthful religious leader said this is treatment typical of what Negroes may expect when they move into previously all-white neighborhoods.
MAN HIT IN STONING INCIDENT
The stoning incident involved John X and Marian Coffield, who moved into the "white" district last month and were subjected to considerable harassment.
Recalled Mrs. Coffield, "A few days before we moved in I was cleaning up and was continually interrupted by people throwing stones at the windows and banging on the door. They were white - I saw them - and one of the main offenders was a woman carrying a baby in her arms."
Mrs Coffield said she called police and they instructed her to stay in the house no matter what happened. They, meanwhile, patrolled the street every half hour.
VIOLENCE STARTS AGAIN
Mrs. Coffield said there were no further incidents until she and her husband moved into their home. They were entertaining her brother Sterling J. X. Hobbs, at dinner when whites threw rocks through the window. One struck her brother in the side, she said.
Mrs. Coffield said she and her husband complained to the real estate agent who sold them the home (Sherr Realty) and that they were told the neighborhood was predominantly colored.
They paid over $8,000 for the property, she stated.
