The Allegany Republican of the 18th inst. states, that a deaf and dumb man by the name of Franklin, of Canada, went on a previous Sunday night, to the house of a Mr. Petit, Franklinville, in Cattaraugus Co. as is supposed to gain admittance, Mr. P. hearing the noise at the door enquired who was there, several times—Fearing persons were there that intended him no good as he received no answer, he got out of bed, took down his rifle and fired at the door, the ball passed through the body of Franklin who dropped dead at the door. Petit immediately delivered himself up to justice. Franklin was an industrious, ingenious and respectable man, his loss is much regretted by his many respectable friends and relatives.
