Out for Revenge.
If Mr. Hanna had wired to the president last week the thought that was uppermost in his mind, his telegram would have read: "God reigns and I intend to punish the republicans who opposed me."
The first thing Hanna's supporters tried to do, after the senatorial election, was to study up methods whereby they could unseat men in office who refused to bow the knee to Hanna. That spirit had its inspiration in the boss himself: the first thing he did after making sure of the senatorship was to proclaim his purpose from the balcony of a Columbus hotel. He said: "The lines are drawn. We know the difference between patriot and traitor, and it so happens that, aside from being a senator, I occupy the exalted position given to me by the republican party of the United States as chairman of the national committee of that party, and in my official capacity I now utter the proclamation that no traitor is wanted in our camp. I have no desire to put any indignity upon any man, but I have a desire to visit upon every man the fruits of his own sins when he sins against our party."
This proclamation involves large possibilities. Mr. Hanna serves notice on Bushnell, McKisson, Foraker and the rest that they may expect no quarter and that they may set their political households in order for a crushing. Mr. Hanna may deal with his Ohio republicans, but his manifesto has a wider significance. He knows no republican except a Hanna republican, and he asserts that as chairman of the national republican committee he will apply that test. According to his definition, in Ohio or elsewhere, the man who is not a Hanna republican is a "traitor"—that is the word Hanna himself uses—and he will be dealt with accordingly. This Ohio braggart is getting himself mixed up with Kaiser William.
