TO THE PUBLIC.
It is with the utmost reluctance and regret I find myself compelled to trespass on the public with any personalities; but being most wantonly attacked by the editor of the Herald in his three last numbers, with regard to the delivery of the Public Mail two hours too late for his convenience. It is, we all know, the duty of the Post Master should such neglect or delay take place, to report it, in order that the law might be enforced against the Mail Carrier; indeed the Merchants would too complain; but of all others concerned, Mr O'Connor is the only person in Norfolk who is disposed to murmur ; and far his over anxious conduct, I had the pleasure to meet him yesterday, and bestowed on him moderate chastisement, so much so that I am well convinced seven eighths of the good citizens of this Borough will think it too moderate for the libel on me. He has given as his reason for not resisting it that I was not his equal To this mighty standing of his I have only to refer to those who know us both. I hope this will be the last appeal I shall have to make, as Mr O'Connor says he will not again disgrace his columns with my name.
