Samory Defeated by the French

ST. LOUIS, Senegal, April 19.—Advices from the interior show that the situation of the French expedition, under the command of Colonel Humbert, has greatly improved since last reports reached the coast. Recently King Samory gathered together a great force, and was about to attack the French, and grave fears were entertained that the latter would all be killed. The news just received, however, shows that though Samory did attack the French, he suffered a bad defeat, and that a great number of his men were killed. The French loss was trifling. The battle took place near Kouane, on March 1. Two thousand of the natives are armed with modern rifles, but, fortunately for the French, they did not know how to properly use them.
