Northwood's Busting With Writing Talent
By Ronald Tripp

Only time will tell if Northwood shall produce a Hemingway or Frost; it does now have some very active, talented writers and journalists busily at work.

The Red and Black, school newspaper, is published once a month by a staff of 16 students with Steve Schatzow as editor and Miss Mary Lee Ruddle as faculty advisor.

As a student newspaper The Red and Black tries to instruct and influence students and teachers in worthwhile projects and ideas of local, national, and international interest while also featuring student news, school events, and sports.

Under the direction of Steve and his editors, who include Mark Schulman, news; Sally Liebewitz, features; and Dick Berliner, sports, the staff hopes to win again this year the First Place Award from the Columbia Press Association and also from the Quill and Scroll Literary Society, both of which it won last year.

Northwood's yearbook staff is also working overtime to "meet the deadline."

Norman Naimark, editor, and Ronald Redmond, the faculty sponsor, are working hard to keep the Arrowhead's "A" rating awarded by the Columbia Press Association. Northwood was one of two schools in the county to receive this award last year.

Norman's chief assistants include Sharon Patterson, literary editor; Joyce Neff, personal picture editor; Emily Eiselman, art editor; and business manager, Barbara Levinsen.

Mrs. Evelyn Bond, senior English teacher, is hard at work with her committee in making plans and choosing selections and themes for Northwood's literary magazine, Reflections.

Reflections features both creative writing and artwork by Northwood students.

Assisting Mrs. Bond in the selection of the articles and a theme are seniors Jean Feldman, Lolly Fine, Barbara Levinsen, Susan Libbon, Joyce Neff, and Sandy Sher.

Hugh Barfield, Evans Browne, Beverly Hauss, Robert McIlvaine, Bill McLin, Judith Pritchard, Jane Vallery, and Sheila Zirkind were notified recently that their poems are to be published in the D'Youville Anthology, edited by D'Youville College, Buffalo, N. Y.

Where does Northwood recruit and develop all its literary talent? A great number of these students excelling in journalism and creative writing are enrolled in senior level Advanced Composition and Journalism classes taught by Miss Mary Lee Ruddle.

Many are enrolled in the advanced English classes taught by Mrs. Jean Curley, Mrs. Jean Biggs, Mrs. Catherine Fox, and Mrs. Evelyn Bond. In addition to these regularly scheduled classes Miss Ruddle has instituted a creative writing seminar for students who have or will participate in scholastic literary composition.
