Teachers Warned
By Dean At Meet
SUMTER, S. C. - County Teachers in their regular monthly meeting at the Lincoln High School was warned by Dr. Reid E. Jackson, Dean of Administration, Morris College, that tightening certification requirements in South Carolina and throughout the nation as a whole make it imperative for all teachers to engage in self-analysis and then decide whether, after all, they are actually fitted to make competent and effective teachers.
Dean Jackson asserted that "teachers, generally, are not now taking an active part in the everyday affairs of their respective communities and are not exerting honest efforts to improve life in those communities or to make current problems the center of their teaching."
"The teacher who does not keep abreast with present-day issues and events and allow himself to be blinded by the seeming importance of facts and figures, will soon be left by the wayside when present efforts to upgrade the quality of teaching in America get into full sway.
"The present controversy between a segregated system of education and integrated educational facilities will resolve itself within the next decade, in the gradual integration of all educational opportunities, under the weight of critical intelligence and economic need.
"Negro teachers must be prepared to meet the same exacting standards as any other teachers and be willing to accept the verdict of unpreparedness if such is the case," Dr. Jackson concluded.
