It is too late to write about him ere long to ask how his health is? I'm told he's better. I'm glad of it. But should he chance not to recover, I want to know if Albert Gallatin, should he be elected Vice President, would succeed to the Presidency? A young man at my elbow tells me he would. Amen, I'm against the Crawford ticket altogether. For, while I live, I don't want to see an American ship put under command of a foreigner. American tars understand the American language, but they are not ready to take the chance of entering with a commander whose language they would have to learn. They've no time for that, either in port or at sea; in a gale or in a fight. Let us have none of this. No, not even the chance of it. I wish Mr. Crawford may get well. I've no hostility to him—but there's better commanders than he, even though he'd never been sick in his life—give us one of them. There's Adams—nobody objects to him. He's a sound true-blooded American and there's Jackson, and Clay, and a thousand others—all good men and true, who haven't got a foreigner for their first mate. No, too, give us an American—so says the friend of old Barney, and the NAVY.
