We learn from the National Intelligencer, that-- The following States have, in compliance with the invitation of the Board of Managers, offered to send blocks of stone to be deposited in the great National Monument now in the course of erection in this city, viz: Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Michigan, (a block of copper,) New Hampshire, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Illinois and the Territory of Minnesota. [This block is what is called E-an-shah, or red stone, the famous pipe clay of the Indians.]
The fine block of granite from Maine has been received, and is the first that has reached its place of destination. It has simply the name of the State, standing out in large characters, and handsomely executed on the face of the stone. The Board will be under the necessity of placing these blocks in the interior wall of the obelisk, as they are received, and not according to the date of the admission of the States into the Union, as was at first designed.
The following States, it is to be regretted, have as yet given no intimation of their intention to comply with the suggestion of the Board of Managers, viz: Maryland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Connecticut, Kentucky, Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, and Arkansas.
