OF IRRIGATING
J. B. Brown, University of California extension service specialist in irrigation, was in the valley the greater part of the week and held three meetings for the discussion of citrus irrigation, according to Assistant Farm Advisor Frank Bessey.
Brown spoke of the tendency in the valley to arrange too long irrigation runs, not only in the citrus groves, but in alfalfa and other crops. He gave an illustration of his point that runs should be short with the history of one farmer's experience. Methods of flooding, and various types of furrowing were discussed by Brown.
Bessey also talked on cover crops, speaking especially of the now calcarata vetch, which is now very satisfactory.
The first of those meetings was held on Monday at the Doran ranch north of Meloland, the second on Tuesday at the G. H. Knight place north of Calexico, and the third, Wednesday at Mrs. H. G. Baughman's ranch north of Brawley. The total attendance was 75.
One hundred more acres are planted to spinach around El Centro, Butte counties, than was set out one year.
