Hurley Denies He Is Seeking Data

TOKIO. Aug. 21. (U.P.)-Patrick J. Hurley, secretary of war, in an interview today denied that he was proceeding to Manila at the request of President Hoover to gather data justifying veto by the President of a possible Philippine independence bill in the next congress.

He said unofficially that he believed President Hoover would not veto such a bill unless facts demonstrated it was necessary.

The army and navy oppose such independence, he said, believing that it would result in political and economic disaster within a year.
