WASHINGTON. Sept. 25.-
The "flying post office" became a reality today. The first govern- ment plane, a C-54 Skymaster, left here this morning with a load of mail for Chicago.
Postmaster Robert E. Hanne- gan said that the beginning of this type of airmail service mark- ed a decided forward step in ac- celerating mail service in the United States.
He said further that, imme- diately after midnight tonight, the postage rate on airmail let- ters in this country will be re- duced from eight to five cents.
He added that if the American public will patronize sufficiently the flying post office the time on the delivery of letters will be greatly decreased from coast to coast and from border to border.
He concluded by saying he hoped the patronage will be so good it will not be long before the post office department will make a further reduction in the rate of airmail letters.
