TIME FOR RELIGIOUS TEACHING
Religious education in public schools
has been the subject of considerable debate since United States Supreme Court
ruled adversely on a program in effect in
the schools of Champaign, Illinois.
We have never been able to understand the insistence of religious leaders upon securing an hour a week of school time
for the purpose of sectarian, religious instruction. It would seem to us that there is
plenty of time, in the average child's
week, for religious instruction without
encroaching upon the twenty-five hours,
more or less, allotted to school attendance.
The International Council of Religious
Education has advised churches against
the use of public school buildings or
public school machinery and the habit of
permitting school authorities to have a
hand in the selection of teaching or the
supervision of teaching.
...While we believe that education naturally includes some of the basic religious
concepts,
we do not believe that it is
necessary to have sectarian, religious instruction included in the functions of
any public school.
The balanced, rational life includes a
portion of play and pleasure.
