Full Text

We are sorry to learn from the morning papers, that the grave fathers of the city had a narrow escape last evening from serious danger. Three new stoves have been lately put up in the Common Council Chamber, in which anthracite coal is burnt. The quantity of deleterious gas generated by them, produced a gradual sickening effect, which thinned the number of those present, until it was discovered that there was not a quorum left. On withdrawing from the destructive atmosphere the effects were evident on many of those who had inhaled it. The Mercantile mentions that Mr. Bryson of the Fourth Ward, fainted, and it was not until great exertion of Dr. Townsend, of the Sixth Ward, that he was restored even to animation. We learn, also, that Mr. Seymour and Mr. Jeremiah were seriously affected. There can be no doubt that death would have ensued from a prolonged stay in such a Gehenna. If Dante had known the properties of the anthracite coal, he would have furnished one of his Circles liberally with patent stoves. [N. Y. Com.]
