On Tuesday, the 19th ult., the Mayor of Philadelphia issued his warrant for the apprehension of a black man calling himself Caesar Gunsoun, and practising in that city as a "Steam Doctor"—the charge being that of having caused the death of a black female child, about eight years old.
Gunsoun was brought to the office, and, after examination, the Mayor committed the accused to answer for murder.
The principal witness was the mother of the girl, who swore that her child, by the doctor's directions, had been wrapped in flannel, placed over a tub of boiling water, and kept there for a considerable time; the water being kept constantly hot, by heated bricks thrown in at frequent intervals.
The child, who, it should be remarked, was seriously ill, screamed during the operation, and repeatedly begged that she might be released and laid on the bed.
Soon after the steaming, she died; and two highly respectable physicians stated their decided opinions that the operation had caused her death.
The exterior skin, on the whole of the lower part of the body, had been scalded shockingly, and the interior was highly inflamed.
These gentlemen had examined the body after death. They had not seen the child while living.
