Post Office thrown open For Inspection Saturday Night.
The workmen got so far advanced by Saturday noon that Postmaster Trowbridge concluded that he would throw the office open to the public view on Saturday night. and move the mails in on Sunday. Everything being new, it was merely a transfer of books, letters, papers, etc. On Saturday night a large number paid the office a visit. In the old office the boxes were in the center and the public worked to the right or left as the case might be, but in the new office which is about 35 by 75 feet, with a glass front with two doors,we go into a lobby opening in the center, running back some forty feet and some twelve feet wide. The trimmings are in polished oak, the high ceiling allowing for glass on the top of the two sides and across the rear. At our right on entering, we come to the money order and registered letter department, a few feet farther is the stamp and general delivery window.
Passing along down the room we find the postmaster's private office, and across the 12 feet delivery windows for packages and receptables for heavy mail matter The boxes, 1030 in number, are all on the left side going In, or north side of office. The mailing room is large, situated on the east end of the building. Particular pains has been taken by the Electric company in the fitting up of the lights for the office, and it lights up beautifully already. although not fully completed. The lobby being only 12 feet wide may be crowded at times. but as a whole it is a credit to Naugatuck.
