Then they had no conception of written language; but by the Missionaries their language has since been reduced to writing, and one hundred and fifty millions of printed pages have not been sufficient to meet the demand of the native mind for reading.
Upwards of 30,000 have been admitted to the communion of different Evangelical churches, who have continued to adorn their profession;—about one third of the entire population. Formerly they were governed, so far as governed at all, by the will of despotism; now they have a written code of laws; the regular administration of justice; and the common blessings of freedom and Christianity. What a lesson for patriots!
