Dr. James H. Birnie, Professor of Biology at Morehouse College, spoke in the fourth and final seminar in the series of seminars sponsored by the Morehouse Department of Sociology. Each seminar consisted of three sessions, during which the lecturers or seminar conductor speaks and provides an opportunity for the discussion of significant topics.
On Tuesday afternoon, February 8, Dr. Birnie discussed "Some Biological Factors Related to Integration."
He also pointed out that general sanitation and health, proportional incidence of specific diseases, maternity rates and infant mortality, longevity, etc., are variable or racial correlates that must be considered in the whole matter of integration or readiness for integration.
On Wednesday, Dr. Birnie spoke on some psychological and personality problems involved in race relations. This discussion centered around the basic thesis of Kardiner and Ovesey's "Mark of Oppression."
In the third lecture of his series, Dr. Birnie discussed "Teaching and the Spirit of Research."
A thumbnail summary of this lecture is included in his final statement that the real joy of teaching lies in the opportunity it offers to awaken and direct inquiring spirits.
