Editor, Geauga Record:
I would like to clear a few misconceptions which I fear may have arisen in Geauga County.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a national organization. It is non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political. It is approved and encouraged by the American Medical Association and doctors everywhere.
The founder of TOPS national, Mrs. Esther Manz of Milwaukee, was aided by a doctor when she started the first club.
Since diet and weight reducing regulations are definitely a personal and individual problem, each club member has to have her own health directions set up by her family physician.
The club works on the idea of group therapy for the obese, much as the AA works for the alcoholic.
Every TOPS club must be authorized through national headquarters. All TOPS materials are copyrighted and registered in Washington and cannot be copied or used.
There is at the present time one TOPS club in Geauga County. It is called the "Geauga Melting Pots." The leader is Mrs. Rose Vargo of Novelty. The group is for women only.
If there is a man interested in starting a group, I would like to have him contact me.
If any women are interested in joining a club or becoming the leader of a club they can write to me directly or call me.
It has been called to my attention that there are several clubs in Geauga County which are using the name TOPS. The letter is self-explanatory. I felt this was a nice way to warn them to change the name of their clubs.
Thank you,
Mrs. Colleen Lamprecht

Main Argument
tops is a national non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organization approved by the american medical association for weight reduction through group therapy, with each member following their physician's advice; only one official club exists in geauga county, and unauthorized groups using the name should change it.
