"—And where we lay
Our chimneys were blown down."
—Macbeth.

Last Sunday night, we were visited by an exceedingly heavy storm, accompanied by wind, hail and rain, and we fear, that in the violence of the gale, some of our seafaring friends found "a death couch," in the bosom of the deep. The brigantine Pocahontas, lying at the ship yard of Mr. Barstow, was, by the winds and waves, driven from her moorings, carried away her mainmast, ripped up the decks, and suffered some other injury. The fate of this vessel, perhaps is ominous of the future fate that is destined to attend a distinguished gentleman of the Pocahontas family—the Hon. John Randolph, of Roanoke. This descendant of the celebrated Indian Princess, it will be remembered, was, by the Legislature of Virginia, driven from his moorings, in the Senate Chamber of the United States, some short time since; but we are happy to add that he suffered no injury, but on the contrary, if report is to be believed, realised some benefit from the event. The last accounts we have had of him, report, that since his discomfiture, he has betaken himself to "prayer books," though it is not certain, that, like the Duke of Gloucester, he has in view some favoured "Lady Anne." But no matter for that—John has repented of his political sins—Doctor Crump has resigned his seat in Congress, to make room for him, and further than all this, has offered to let Mr. Moore shoot at him at eight paces. Thus it will be seen, that if the lineal descendant of Pocahontas has been unmoored, between Doctor Crump, Mr. Moore and his constituents, he will be Moore-d again in the National Legislature. It is further said, on the authority of some one of less note than Farmer Giles, that Jack Randolph, has renounced the political dogmas of Edmund Burke and Lord Castlereagh, for those of Mr. Adams, and Mr. Monroe—has destroyed his Voltaire and Gibbon, and is about to adopt the theological doctrines of Geo. Whitfield! What an eloquent preacher he will make, and how happily will he not discourse, at the religious festival of Easter!

A severe storm damages the brigantine Pocahontas, analogized to Hon. John Randolph's expulsion from the U.S. Senate by Virginia's Legislature, his subsequent political repentance, congressional seat offer from Doctor Crump, duel challenge to Mr. Moore, and shift to Adams-Monroe politics and Whitfield theology.
