At a large and respectable meeting of the citizens of the county of Frederick, holden agreeably to public notice at the hall of the common council of the town of Winchester, Va. on the third of May, 1824, Robert Page, esq. was called to the chair, and Samuel H. Davis appointed secretary.
On motion. The address of the Fredericksburg committee on the subject of the presidential election, was read; after which the following preamble and resolutions were presented and unanimously adopted.
Whereas it is the high prerogative of the sovereign people of the U. States, at all times, peaceably to assemble for the purpose of expressing their sentiments in all matters of public interest : It is believed that it is only in the exercise of this important right that the public mind can be impartially displayed and fully known--that it is thus that the public voice cannot be stifled or controlled by the factitious influence of caucus nomination.
The citizens of the county of Frederick, assembled on the present occasion, desirous that no false impression of their sentiments should be received by their fellow citizens generally, but anxious that their sentiments and feelings should be correctly known and extensively promulgated, have deemed this a fit and proper occasion to assemble for that purpose: Therefore,
Resolved, That this meeting highly approve of the nominations made by a meeting of the citizens of Fredericksburg, of John Quincy Adams for president, and gen. Andrew Jackson for vice president of the U. States, and they pledge themselves to support an electoral ticket hereafter to be formed in Virginia, in favor of those distinguished citizens, and to use all fair and honorable means to ensure its success,
Resolved, That Daniel Lee, Thomas Cramer, John W. Page, Robert Page, Obed Waite, Robert I. Baldwin, Richard W. Barton, Samuel H. Davis. Wm. M'Cormick, D. H. Conrad; John Hollingsworth, John M. Brome, James Baker, John Macky. Dr. C. Baldwin, and John Kerfoot, be a committee of correspondence, whose duty it will be to correspond with a similar committee appointed in Fredericksburg. for the like purpose, as well as with all other committees that have been, or may be hereafter be appointed to promote the object of this meeting, and to answer all communications which may be addressed to the said committee, or to either of them, by any individual or individuals in this state, well disposed to further the object of this meeting.
Resolved, That when this meeting adjourns, it will adjourn to meet again on Monday the 2d of August next.
Resolved, That the corresponding committee report to the adjourned meeting in August next, such measures as may have been taken in regard to the object of this meeting.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the chairman and secretary, and published in the papers of the town, with a request that they be published in the papers generally of the commonwealth. ROBT. PAGE, ch'n SAML. H. DAVIS, sec.
