Voters Take Slice Of Dies Committee

WASHINGTON, D. C.-(NNPA) -A review of election and pre-election results reveals that a majority of the Dies Committee on un-American Activities has been killed off politically. The latest casualty is Rep. Fred E. Busbey (R. of Ill.) who was defeated in the elections last week by Edward A. Kelly (D).

Busbey was preceded by Rep. Martin Dies, himself, who withdrew from the primaries in Texas when it became apparent that he could not win and by John M. Costello of California, who was defeated in the primaries.

Busbey was an arch-foe of the CIO and was as adept at smearing Red paint as was Dies. He used his franking privilege to mail out thousands of postcards warning his countrymen that the re-election of Roosevelt would mean turning this country over to the Communists. The card also mentioned that Sidney Hillman, chief target of the attack, married Bessie Abramowitz-a Busbey method of Jew-baiting.

The Dies Committee has thrown Communist charges at Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune, Dr. Robert C. Weaver, Dr. Ira De A. Reid, Willard Townsend, Roscoe Dunjee, Judge William Hastie, and many other Negro leaders who came out in support of Roosevelt for President and were members of the National Citizens Political Action Committee.
