BY MYSTERY ASSAILANT
JANESVILLE, Wis.—Awakened by the sound of low moans at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Mrs. Charles Beversdorf found her husband lying in a pool of blood, his scalp split open by a club, in the bedroom of their farm home near Footville, 10 miles west of here.
Physicians said Beversdorf, who is 37, would recover, but he was unconscious and unable to talk late Tuesday.
Robbery is believed to be the motive for the attack, although only a watch and a pair of spectacles were found missing. The Beversdorfs have no enemies, according to neighbors.
Officials are mystified because no member of the family heard sounds of the attack. Mr. Beversdorf slept with a daughter, Violet, 4, and his wife slept in another bed in the same room with another daughter, Margaret, 6.
The farmer's assailant knocked him senseless with one blow of a heavy club, according to the theory of Undersheriff Fred Beley. The man's father, Otto Beversdorf, slept in a room above and said he heard no sounds during the night.
