The annual reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic will begin to-morrow in Chicago. Elaborate preparations have been made to give the beloved old soldiers a welcome befitting the value of their services during the years when the life of the nation hung in the balance and when they offered their lives in defense of the flag. In a later war the young men of the nation with equal patriotism enlisted to protect the honor of the government and to extend the blessings of freedom to the oppressed, but their term of service was shorter and their hardships much less severe than those which the veterans of the rebellion faced. In another column will be found many facts of interest regarding the Grand Army of the Republic and the battles in which they took part.
To-morrow's Inter Mountain will contain a full account of the proceedings of the annual encampment and the speeches which will again stir up the patriotism of the valorous old heroes of a war which nearly forty years ago was waged that the government might live.
Then, as now, there were men operating in the rear against them, and now, as then, the enemies of the government will suffer the humiliation of exposure and defeat.
