Board Meets at Ellensburg
Fixes the Course of Studies.
ELLENSBURG, July 8. - [Special.] - The
state normal board, composed of W. R.
Abrahams and T. J. Newland, of Ellens-
burg, H. F. Suksdorf and L. Walter, of
Cheney, and State Superintendent Bean,
met here yesterday. H. F. Suksdorf was
elected president of the board. By the
by-laws adopted, the superintendent of
public instruction is made ex-officio secre-
tary, and the annual meeting will be held
on the fourth Wednesday in June. All
graduates of the Ellensburg and Cheney
normal schools for the past two years were
granted diplomas, which will be at once
prepared. The following advanced course
of study was adopted:
First year - Physiology and zoology, 20 weeks;
arithmetic, 20 weeks; grammar and compo-
sition, 30 weeks; civil government and school
law, 20 weeks; English and United States his-
tory, 10 weeks; reading, 10 weeks; penmanship,
10 weeks; drawing, 10 weeks; music, 40 weeks;
physical and mathematical geography, 20 weeks;
reading methods
and; elementary algebra,
30 weeks.
Second
year - Mental
arithmetic, 20 weeks;
plane geometry, 20 weeks; rhetoric, 20 weeks;
English literature, 20 weeks;
elementary phys-
ology, 10 weeks; school management, 10 weeks;
bookkeeping, 20 weeks; physics, 20 weeks; bot-
any, 20 weeks; arithmetic methods,
10 weeks;
observation in training school, 10 weeks.
Third year - Geology
and mineralogy, 20
weeks; descriptive astronomy, 10 weeks; solid
geom-
etry, 20 weeks; trigonometry, 20 weeks; ad-
vanced algebra, 10 weeks; English and Ameri-
can literature, 20 weeks; general history, 20
weeks; chemistry, 20 weeks; geographical
methods, 10 weeks;
observation in training
school, 10 weeks.
Fourth year - Review of arithmetic, 10 weeks;
review of grammar, 10 weeks; review of geog-
raphy, 10 weeks; review of reading, 10 weeks;
advanced algebra, 10 weeks; applied physiol-
ology, 20 weeks; history of education, 20 weeks;
grammer methods, 20
weeks; practical teach-
ing, 20 weeks.
Drills in penmanship, drawing, music, calis-
thenics, orthography and rhetoric throughout
the entire course.
The first two years' course was adopted
as the elementary course. This course of
study is uniform for all normal schools of
the state. Among the rules adopted are
the following:
Entrance examinations will be held annually,
questions for which will be prepared by the
superintendent of public instruction.
Each student is required to pay in advance an
annual incidental fee of $5.
In all final standings students shall secure a
minimum marking of at least 70 per cent and a
minimum average of at least 75 per cent.
Students before being admitted to the normal
department must pass a final examination on
all subjects required for second grade county
teacher's certificate, except penmanship, read-
ing, grammar, arithmetic, civil government,
school law and physiology.
Cheney was selected as the next place of
meeting.
