Our telegraphic dispatch by the way of Louisville, furnishes a wondrous account from California, for which Mr. Parrott is given as authority. Mr. P. arrived at Mobile in the last British steamer, the Severn, and certainly nothing was heard there of these wonderful discoveries. At least they were not given to the public—and there is no reason why they should have been left untold. The huge diamond is, we suspect, something apocryphal. The size mentioned exceeds that of the largest diamond ever yet discovered. The Portuguese diamond, considered the largest in the world—found in Brazil—which lapidaries have estimated, according to the different rules of computing the value, at from fifty millions to three hundred millions sterling!—is much smaller than an ordinary hen's egg. It is uncut, and some skilful jewellers doubt its genuineness. The great Pitt diamond is not one-third of the size of this California phenomenon. We are very skeptical about the diamond story, and take California marvels generally with a liberal allowance of margin for reduction to sober and rational proportions.
