Full Text

Mr. Gilmer seems to be determined to have all the Eastern appointments to suit himself, as it was with the Western. We observe that he has added Columbia Tyrrell, where he will be to-day and Washington, Beaufort, where he will be on Monday next. He has omitted both Martin and Currituck Counties, in which Gov. Bragg was anxious to speak; and we presume the Governor left Mr. Gilmer temporarily for the purpose of visiting Currituck. Mr. Gilmer must be exceedingly anxious to get clear of Gov. Bragg. He made the Western appointments without consulting the Governor; and if the Governor had not written to him, it is more than probable that Mr. Gilmer would have left Greensborough for Cherokee without communicating with him at all on the subject. This has been denied by unscrupulous K. N. presses, but Mr. Gilmer knows it to be so. Mr. Gilmer also remembers that he informed Gov. Bragg that when they got West they would, together, make the Eastern appointments. How has he redeemed his pledge?—He has not redeemed it at all, but persists thus far in the campaign in making the appointments to suit himself. We state facts—let the K. N. organs rage.

But Mr. Gilmer will not get away from Gov. Bragg by any such course as this. The Governor, we are assured, will be with him generally all along through the campaign, as he will be ahead of him, by many thousands, on the first Thursday in August.

Event Details

Mr. Gilmer is scheduling speaking appointments in Eastern counties like Columbia Tyrrell and Washington Beaufort without consulting Gov. Bragg, omitting Martin and Currituck Counties where the Governor wanted to speak. This follows a pattern from Western appointments made independently. Despite a pledge to make Eastern appointments together, Mr. Gilmer proceeds alone. Gov. Bragg will join him throughout the campaign and lead on election day.
