"We have had the greatest Flood this Week ever known in this Country, which has done incredible Damage. Most of the Bridges are washed away, particularly those at Cardiff, Bassalleg, and Stow, and three or four more higher up that River; Caerleon Bridge is likewise thrown down. The Wife of a Tinman of Caerleon, who it is supposed was passing the Bridge when it fell, luckily caught Hold of a Beam, upon which she floated down through the Bridge at this Town, and was taken up three Miles below the Place by a Man Boat. As soon as she was put on Shore she got a Horse and rode home, and was the first to acquaint her Husband of the Accident; she is big with Child. Great Numbers of Cattle, Sheep, and Horses, and some with Saddles on, have come through our Bridge, and the Body of a poor Woman has been taken up at our Wharf."

The greatest flood ever known in the country occurred this week, causing extensive damage. Bridges at Cardiff, Bassalleg, Stow, and others higher up the river were washed away; Caerleon Bridge thrown down. A tinman's wife from Caerleon, pregnant and crossing the bridge, caught a beam, floated through the bridge, and was rescued three miles below by boat. She rode home on horseback to inform her husband. Numerous saddled horses and other livestock passed through the local bridge; a woman's body found at the wharf. Ongoing reports of losses and drownings.
