Goldwin Smith on Ireland.
London Truth.

Mr. Goldwin Smith must somewhat regret his violent article in the Nineteenth Century, as the opportune publication of the Pall Mall Gazette of a letter written by him in November, 1867 (on the day of the execution of 'the Manchester martyrs'), reminds the public that this very Mr. Smith, who is now urging the most violent measures against Ireland and Irish members, was then something of a Home Ruler himself and entirely sympathized with the popular aversion to that union which he is now so frantically eager to preserve. This is another example of the truth of the old saying that renegade Jews always become the most ruthless officers of the Inquisition. How Mr. Goldwin Smith reconciles his invectives against the Irish 'Separatists' with his own exertions for Canadian separation, I am unable to conjecture.
