NOW LYING IN STATE
Remains Taken From Palace to Westminster Hall.
London, May 18.—The body of King Edward VII. was taken with stately pomp from Buckingham palace on the first stage of the journey to the grave and now lies in state in Westminster hall, where hundreds or thousands will pay a last tribute to the dead monarch before the final passage through the streets of the capital.
Mr. Roosevelt, special American ambassador to the funeral of King Edward, did not participate in the ceremony attending the removal of the body of the king from Buckingham palace to Westminster hall. In company with Mrs. Roosevelt, Miss Roosevelt, Kermit, American Ambassador Reid and Mrs. Reid he witnessed the procession from a house in Carlton House terrace.
The procession lasted only half an hour, but in that brief period one of the greatest crowds that ever jammed a section of London witnessed a wonderful scene of mingled pomp and gloom.
The route, one mile in length, was lined by 11,500 soldiers, who stood so close together as almost to touch shoulders.
The procession lacked the glitter of royalty that will mark the funeral procession on Friday. Aside from King George and the members of the British royal household few of the visiting monarchs participated in the exercises.
The procession was made up of the army headquarters staff, the army council, the board of admirals, field marshals and admirals, King George and the other members of the royal household.
