Full Text

Blessed effect of gambling,

Sergeant R. was found by the men of the fort and after being confined about three months recovered of his wound, and lived until the year 1800—when he died at the age of seventy four.

The man who was taken prisoner, made his escape eighteen months afterwards, and arrived safely at home.

The writer of this short narrative had it from the mouth of sergeant R. who was a man of veracity. The scars of the wounds he has seen, and the ball which lodged in the hip of the sergeant, he carried with him to the grave.

In his lifetime, he always said, that they undoubtedly owed this disaster to the want of vigilance occasioned by the bewitching influence of gaming and loudly protested against its pernicious tendency until the day of his death.
